Trezor.io/Start | Official Getting Started Guide™

Clear. Secure. First-time friendly — a step-by-step walkthrough to get your Trezor hardware wallet up and running.

1. Before you start

Overview

This section covers the small list of things to prepare before you unbox your Trezor device. Follow these recommendations to ensure safety, reduce risk, and make the setup smooth.

Requirements

Checklist
Do this before powering on:
  1. Verify packaging is untampered.
  2. Keep your recovery card or paper ready.
  3. Use the official Trezor Suite application (recommended).

2. Setup & First Boot

Step-by-step

Step 1 — Connect your Trezor

Plug your Trezor into your computer or mobile device. When first connected the device screen will show the Trezor logo and an invitation to visit Trezor.io/start for the official initialization flow.

Step 2 — Visit the official start page

Open a browser and go to https://trezor.io/start. The official site will guide you to download Trezor Suite or use the web-based initialization tool. Always confirm the address begins with https://trezor.io.

Step 3 — Install Trezor Suite (recommended)

Trezor Suite is the desktop application recommended for most users. It provides wallet management, firmware updates, and a clear interface for transactions and account management.

Step 4 — Initialize the device

Follow the on-screen prompts to create a new wallet or restore an existing one. Choose Create new if this is a fresh device. The device will generate a recovery seed — follow the instructions carefully and write the seed down in order.

Step 5 — Set a PIN

Choose a strong PIN that only you will know. The PIN protects access to the device; it is not a recovery credential and cannot be recovered if lost.

3. Security best practices

Keep your assets safe

Trezor keeps your private keys offline. Your role is to follow best practices that prevent physical or social-engineering compromises.

Do

Don't

About passphrase protection

A passphrase acts as a 25th seed word. It is optional but highly recommended for users who want plausible deniability or multi-account separation. Treat the passphrase as a password — if you lose it you may lose access permanently.

4. Using Trezor Suite

Core features

Trezor Suite is the all-in-one app for desktop and web that helps you manage accounts, send/receive crypto, sign messages, and update firmware.

Accounts & coins

Suite supports many major cryptocurrencies. Add accounts, view balances, and see transaction history. Use the built-in exchange or bridges to swap assets where available.

Transaction flow

Initiate a transaction in Suite. Connect your device when asked. The Trezor device will show transaction details — always verify recipient address, amount, and fees on the device screen before confirming.

Advanced tools

Features include coin control, address labeling, CSV export for taxes, and more. Advanced users can also use the Trezor Bridge or integrate with third-party wallets while retaining hardware signing security.

5. Recovery & backups

Restoring your wallet

If your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can restore access using your 12/18/24-word recovery seed (depending on the model and configuration) along with any passphrase used.

Write it down — correctly

• Record each word in the exact order.
• Use the recovery card or durable backup.
• Consider using a steel backup if you live in an area with higher environmental risk.

Check your backup

After setup, test a simulated recovery on a secondary device if you have one — practice recovering in a safe offline environment so you know the process works.

What to do if you lose the seed

If the seed is lost and you don't have access to the device or a valid passphrase, funds are unrecoverable. This is why backups and redundancy are critical.

6. Sending and receiving crypto

Receive funds

In Trezor Suite, select the account and click Receive. Verify the address on the device screen and copy it. Always confirm addresses on the device — never trust clipboard-only values.

Send funds

Enter recipient address and amount in Suite. Review fees and confirm the details. The device will display the transaction; confirm on-device to finalize the signature.

Fee tips

Use dynamic fee recommendations or set a custom fee if you understand network conditions. Lower fees mean slower confirmation times.

7. Firmware & updates

Keeping firmware current

Firmware updates contain security fixes and new features. Trezor Suite will notify you when updates are available and verify firmware signatures automatically.

How updates work

  1. Suite downloads signed firmware from the official servers.
  2. Your device verifies the signature before accepting the update.
  3. Follow on-screen instructions to complete the update.
Do not interrupt

Do not disconnect the device during a firmware update. Interruptions can cause temporary unavailability; follow the recovery instructions if something goes wrong.
